UP chairman shot to death in Narsingdi

A UP chairman and also president of union Juba League was gun down by some armed assailants at village Shantipur under Mirjarchar Union of Raipura upazila in Narsingdi on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Jafar Iqbal Manik, 50, chairman of Mirjachar Union of Raipura upazila and also president of Mirjarchar Union Juba League.

Witnesses said that 10 to 12 armed assailants shot at Jafar while he was going to an arbitration meeting at village Shantipur.

Local people rescued Jafar and took him to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Local people and his followers told New Age that there had been a long standing dispute between his Jafar and Awami League leader Awald Hossain Faruque over establishing supremacy in the area.

Jafar might have been killed over the conflict, they said.
